Where does this job happen?
This job happens in a multitude of places, sometimes in a private practice where psychiatrists run their own thing and have people come to them wherever the psychiatrists host their sessions. Sometimes it’s a hospital where psychiatrists address mental health factors relating to physical illnesses. Sometimes you're in an academic institution, you could even be in the military setting! It all depends on what YOU choose to do.
What do they actually do?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health, and unlike some other mental health professionals, they hold a medical degree that allows them to diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and oversee treatment. They begin with a diagnostic assessment to gather information about the patient's background and medical history, then create and implement a treatment plan, often including some psychotherapy. They continue monitoring the patient's progress, making adjustments to medications or strategies as needed. Psychiatrists also focus on preventing future mental health issues and often engage in research to stay up to date with new developments in the field.
What kind of person does this?
Of course different psychiatrists have different personalities and different methods when it comes to work, but in general they will need to be compassionate, trustworthy, and non judgmental! All of these traits play a strong factor in whether you will be successful in the psychiatric field.
What skills do you need?
A psychiatrist needs strong communication skills to listen with empathy and explain treatment clearly, along with professionalism to handle sensitive information ethically. Medical expertise in mental health disorders and treatments is essential, as are critical thinking, patience, and emotional resilience. Cultural awareness also helps provide personalized, respectful care. Together, these skills allow psychiatrists to deliver effective and compassionate support.
How much money can you make?
At entry level you will make around 180,000$ to 220,000$, this is the first like 5 years. Mid Career you will commonly make 220,000$ to 300,000$ annually. This is around 10 years of continuous improvement and growth. Now at your senior level we are looking really bright at salary’s well over 300,000$ and even coming in at 400,000$ for top earners. Sometimes your specialization can have an effect on these numbers but this is the general amount.
